Zelensky will study the possibility of legalizing same-sex marriage in Ukraine

For example, the president responds to a petition with more than 28,000 signatures and adapts to the values requested by Brussels to be part of the European Union

Since European leaders gave the green light to Ukraine’s bid to join the European Union last June, President Volodymyr Zelensky has come closer to achieving his goal. But life is not a bed of roses. Despite the favorable vote, nothing is final yet and Brussels has put several demands on the table. Among them, the establishment of an anti-corruption body and improvements in the protection of the rule of law. Kiev will therefore have to adapt to European values if it really wants to be part of the Twenty-seven. This Wednesday, Zelensky took another step in his approach to Europe.

The country invaded by Russia since Feb. 24 will soon investigate whether marriages between people of both sexes are possible. This is what the Ukrainian president has said, who has asked his prime minister, Denis Shmyha, to consider the possibility of legalizing same-sex marriage. The measure, which is in response to a petition filed on July 3 and signed by more than 28,000 people, reflects an approach to European values that Brussels requires as a guarantee of its accession.

Despite the small step taken by the Ukrainian government, not all that glitters is gold because, as Zelensky has pointed out, according to the constitution, “marriage is based on the free consent of a man and a woman.” It further adds that the country’s Family Code emphasizes that the “family is the primary basic unit of society” and “consists of individuals living together, linked by a common life, with mutual rights and duties.”

Decades ago, homosexuality in Ukraine was punishable by up to five years in prison under Soviet law, but after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Kiev introduced its own penal code that decriminalized same-sex sexual relations. However, marriage is still prohibited for members of the LGTBI collective today.

In order to legalize marriage between the sexes, it would be necessary to update the laws, and at the moment that is not an easy task. Why? As Zelensky has warned, the Constitution cannot be reformed in the midst of the state of emergency declared by the war against Russia. However, on the basis of Article 116 of the same – which states that the government must take measures to guarantee citizens’ freedoms and rights – the president has indicated that his cabinet will work on “solutions” to guarantee the registration of civil unions. . rights and freedoms.
