French President Emmanuel Macron’s statement at the end of February that Western ground troops could not be excluded as military aid to Ukraine not only set off alarm bells in Moscow, but also offended many NATO allies. The opposition parties in France are also very concerned.
“His combative attitude, which does not rule out sending French soldiers, worries the country,” right-wing populist RN party leader Jordan Bardella said on Thursday after a meeting between Macron and top representatives of all parties at the Elysée Palace. Macron has isolated himself internationally due to his position and is playing into the hands of Russian President Vladimir Putin by denouncing intra-European conflicts, according to Bardella.
Socialists: “Ukrainians never asked us for ground troops”
“The Ukrainians have never asked us for ground troops,” said Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure. “Rather than provoke provocations, the president should fulfill the promises he made to Ukraine, especially regarding ammunition and firearms,” he added.
Greens: “That is irresponsible”
Green Party leader Marie Tondelier described it as “worrying” that Macron spoke of “unlimited support” for Russia, where both countries had nuclear weapons. “These are not topics that should be taken lightly, it is irresponsible,” she said.
Macron: “Don’t be a coward”
Macron said in Prague on Tuesday that the moment would soon come when it would be necessary “not to be a coward.” German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) reacted irritated and pointed out that “more pressing problems” had to be solved, such as the production of ammunition.
For the Russian government, the current debate fits perfectly into its propaganda, as it is widely known that it paints the picture of a war against NATO. “Mr Macron is convinced of his policy, which is to inflict a strategic defeat on our country,” presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday in a video distributed on the online service Telegram.
