Clouds of smoke over Lake Leopoldstein near Eisenerz: in the afternoon a forest fire broke out on the lake wall. The flames rage in extremely rough terrain, fire fighting helicopters are in action. Later, firefighters – secured by the mountain rescue service – were flown up the steep slope to fight the source of the fire.
According to the Eisenerz Fire Department, an observant hiker noticed a forest fire in the early stages of formation on the lake wall at Leopoldsteinersee on Wednesday afternoon. The terrain there is extremely steep and not accessible on foot.
That is why a helicopter from the Ministry of the Interior was requested, which tackled the firefighting. Firefighters were later flown in to fight the fire. The mountain rescue helps to secure.
The extinguishing work was still in full swing that evening, but the cause of the fire is still unclear.
