German ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer believes in the existence of aliens. “When you consider how many billions of galaxies there are and how many billions of galaxies there are in each galaxy, the chances of there being a similar solar system like ours with a second Earth are significantly greater than winning the lottery.” the 52-year-old, who returned from the International Space Station in May.
Even if most people don’t win a lottery in their lifetime, this equation clearly speaks of the existence of extraterrestrial life. “Someone on this earth always wins something like this. For me that means: there is most likely life out there,” he told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”.
Definitely not “green men”
He does not know how this was developed or whether it is based on organic chemistry like human life. “Or maybe there’s even another type of chemistry that’s not carbon-based,” Maurer added. Only one thing is certain: that they shouldn’t be “green men” (photo below), as often seen in science fiction movies.
Hoping for a trip to the moon
Maurer also explained why he hoped for a flight to the moon: “The promise from the ESA director general was that everyone should have the chance to fly two flights,” he told the newspaper. The materials researcher with a PhD would like to continue scientific research in space into how life once came to Earth. The ESA hopes this will also provide clues as to whether there is life elsewhere in the universe.
