TV journalist Marina Ovsiannikova became known worldwide for her live protest against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. She recently returned to Moscow, despite the threat of reprisals there. In an interview, the 44-year-old said she knew she could be arrested at any moment: “I’ve decided to play Russian roulette.”
She is “a fighter” and “not afraid despite the intimidation”. “You can find a law to punish everyone,” Ovsiannikova told AFP, referring to a bleak aphorism from the days of Stalinist terror. “If they make that decision, they will arrest me in a day, it will only take a few seconds.”
Owsiannikova rose to international fame when she appeared behind the news anchor during a live television broadcast on March 14, holding a protest poster in front of the camera. The journalist then spent a few months abroad and worked for the German newspaper “Die Welt” for a short time, among other things. In early July, she announced her return to Russia to resolve a custody battle over their two children with her ex-husband, who works at the pro-Kremlin channel RT.
Should be in court on Monday
After her protest on television, she was briefly taken into police custody, but was released again. However, she has since been fined for repeatedly criticizing the military operation in Ukraine. She is due to appear in court again on Monday for allegedly “discrediting” the Russian military.
