The dead are a couple of Septuagarians who were just ten meters from the gate of the residence of the President of the United States
Two people died and many others were seriously injured when they were struck by lightning Thursday night in Lafayette Square, near the White House in Washington — just 30 feet from the fence — police said.
They are a couple from rural Wisconsin: James Mueller, 76, and Donna Mueller, 75, authorities said. The other two victims are in ‘critical condition’. They were aided by White House Secret Service agents, as well as local police patrolling the park near Joe Biden’s official residence. His swift action could be the key for the survivors to stay alive.
White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre expressed her condolences to the families of the deceased in a statement. “We pray for those who are still fighting for their lives,” he added.
The photos published by the fire service show dozens of rescue vehicles in the tree-covered square in the middle of the storm.
According to data from the US health authorities, the chance of being struck by lightning is one in a million. Every year in the US an average of 23 people die from this cause. So far in 2022 there have been nine fatalities in that country.
Washington Fire Department spokesman Vito Maggiolo insisted on the need to shelter in a safe place when lightning strikes. “Trees are not safe places.”
