“We stopped breathing for a while because the whole load consisted of ammunition boxes” – the fire brigade in Oberwang in Upper Austria had to deal with a special operation in a fire on the A1.
On Friday around 11.36 am, the fire brigades of Innerschwand and Oberwang were called to a burning truck in the A1 car park in Strass. The FF Oberwang reports: “When we arrived, we were informed by the state warning center that ASFINAG employees together with the truck driver were trying to contain the fire with fire extinguishers.”
“When we arrived, we stopped breathing for a moment because the whole load was made up of ammunition boxes,” said operations manager Robert Grabner. In cooperation with the police, it soon became apparent that the boxes were not filled, which was confirmed by an initial sample.
Quickly under control
The fire was quickly brought under control using high pressure rapid attack equipment and medium foam. A firefighter, who arranged a wheel loader from his workshop not far away, was able to remove the load per pallet from the trailer pallet to ensure that there were no more embers between the pallets. After cleaning up, the site was handed over to ASFINAG around 1.45 pm.
