In a very short time the sky turned from bright blue to deep black on Friday: severe storms fell over parts of Tyrol. Hotspots were the Sellraintal (Innsbruck-Land district) and Gerlos in the Zillertal (Schwaz district) with mudslides and flooding.
The good news first: apparently no one was injured. After Friday afternoon, many Tyroleans still had beads of sweat on their foreheads in hot, muggy weather, a cold front in the afternoon made it increasingly unstable in large parts of the country.
Homes and hotels affected
Severe thunderstorms with torrential rain, showers and hail were the result and kept many emergency services on their toes. Floods and mudslides also occurred in Gerlos in the Zillertal and in the Sellraintal near Ranggen. Houses and hotels were also hit in Gerlos. Several streams overflowed their banks and some cellars were flooded.
In Sankt Siegmund im Sellrain everything had to be cordoned off because a mudslide just in front of the city completely blocked the road. In Ranggen, a landslide also kept the fire service busy, but it was possible to prevent the masses of earth from making their way into the houses.
Cold front is approaching
Severe thunderstorms are possible Friday afternoon and Saturday evening, especially in the western half of Austria. Walls and flooding are also to be expected. Rain showers are possible across the country on Saturday and there are also strong thunderstorms in the south of Austria, reports the Central Institute of Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG).
