United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed Friday that his country will “work” for a prisoner swap with Russia in an attempt to release American basketball player Brittney Griner, who was sentenced to nine years in prison the day before. for drug possession and smuggling.
Blinken recalled that the United States government had submitted a “substantial proposal” to exchange the detainees, with which “Russia should commit”.
“What the (Russian) Foreign Minister Lavrov said publicly this morning is that they are willing to participate through the channels we have set up to do just that and we will work for it,” he said.
The secretary has also described Griner’s detention as “unjust”, as well as that of Paul Whelan, a US citizen who was imprisoned in Russia in 2018 on charges of espionage, and expressed “concern” about arbitrary prisons in Russia.
President Joe Biden has said he is hopeful and that the government is working hard to free the imprisoned American basketball star.
“I’m hopeful. We’re working hard,” he told reporters at the White House after Moscow said it was ready to discuss a prisoner swap.
