Andy Peters calls ITV’s decision to ban ‘life-changing’ term for cash contests ‘ridiculous’

Date:

Andy Peters, host of the ITV competition, described the company’s decision to ban cash prizes as “life changing.” The 51-year-old takes part in several daily ITV contests on shows such as Good Morning Britain, This Morning and Loose Women, in addition to doing a similar part on Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.

The Mirror reported that the presenter recently appeared on What If? The podcast – hosted by star Lauren Kelly and her daughter Rosie Smith – spoke of a “funny situation” that led her to support the use of the term in the campaign. ITV claims that prizes of .000 to 100,000 or less do not change the course of life, fearing that one of the competition winners will sue the broadcaster.

An ITV spokesperson told The Mirror: “We choose the language of the advertised ITV competition scripts within the agreed editorial instructions. The term Life Change applies only to prize pools greater than 100,000 yen or more, where this amount may be. And that’s how most of the public view it.”

Speaking of £6m, Peters said: ‘Six years ago we paid 1m yen and they didn’t give me the right to trade 1m yen because – that’s exactly what the lawyer said – if Richard Branson won, it wouldn’t change his life. So we quarrelled and said, ‘No, this is going to change his life, because at that moment he will be 1.1 million rich. Life changes.”

“I won’t let you say that. I went all the way. I went to the top. So now the £101,000 and above rule is life changing. It’s a new rule. But if they’re ninety-nine. That changes life.”

He also reminded the audience of Britain’s Good Morning show that he presented an award that he believed would change his life. “We do one where I knock on your door and I give you 3000 3000,” he explained.

“We did that, and we knocked on this woman’s door, and we gave her 3000 3000 and I said ‘just’, and I gave her 250,000 00. That’s relative.

“But you have to remember 3000 3000 is a lot of money and two weeks later he tweeted me saying you should know my car, which has been off the road for a year and a half, and I will take it. The bus to work, I can now do it, now I can go back to work by car.

“Things like this are heartbreaking. There are 3,000 3,000 people who have changed their lives. Everything is subjective. What is money?”
