A hiker reported a forest fire in the Schneeberg area in Lower Austria on Wednesday. The arduous search in the terrain challenged the advanced Florianis and even necessitated the use of air support. Memories of the inferno in Hirschwang came alive!
During an operation in the vicinity of Rax-Schneeberg on Wednesday afternoon, bad memories surfaced. As reported briefly, the fire brigades Puchberg am Schneeberg and Schneebergdörfl initially responded to a “normal” field fire in the Mamauwiese area, but the exact location was not clear at first.
Although the initial reconnaissance of the two fire brigades and the forest fire group 15 were unsuccessful, the district fire brigade commander Josef Huber immediately requested air support.
“Fortunately there was relatively little wind”
The Interior Ministry “dragonfly” and a drone with a thermal imager from the Edlitz Fire Department took off and after about an hour and a half were able to locate the abandoned fireplace in the rocky terrain. “Fortunately, there was relatively little wind, which slowed down further spreading,” explains operational manager Roman Zwinz.
The background of the campfire is of course completely unclear, but the detectives assume carelessness and negligence. Probably a case of stupidity in the current drought.
