At least 12 people have been killed and 31 others injured – some in critical condition – in the serious bus crash that happened this Saturday morning near the Croatian capital Zagreb.
Emergency sources have informed public broadcaster HRT that the bus, arriving from Poland via the Hungarian border, crashed about 25 miles (40 km) northwest of the city around 5:40 a.m. The bus was traveling with a group of pilgrims who had departed from a town near Warsaw and were on their way to visit the Marian Shrine of Medjugorje, in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Firefighters, police and emergency services rescued the travelers and took them to hospitals in Varazdin and Zagreb.
An initial investigation revealed that the driver of the vehicle had fallen asleep at the wheel. The investigation will be crucial to determine the exact causes of the accident.
