US conspiracy ideologue Alex Jones has been fined an additional $45.2 million for his false claims about an elementary school massacre at Sandy Hook. He would now have paid a total of more than $49 million (about $48 million) in damages to a victim’s parents, US media reported from the Texas courtroom. On Thursday, he was already sentenced to more than $4 million in damages.
Friday’s verdict is the so-called punitive damages, which are also intended as a deterrent and often significantly higher than the actual damages. Jones has previously claimed that the December 2012 shooting was staged by actors. A 20-year-old man shot and killed 20 schoolchildren and six teachers in Newtown, Connecticut.
The parents of a six-year-old boy who died had sued the right-wing radio host for his claims. You had previously described the emotional suffering caused by the 48-year-old’s lies. They demanded $150 million in damages. The conspiracy theorist’s attorney argued that the plaintiffs had failed to prove that his client’s words had actually caused harm.
In the past, Jones has always represented far-right positions and spread several gross conspiracy myths. For example, he claimed that the US government was involved in the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York
