Continues to spew lava – gases from Fagradalsfjall volcano threaten nearby village

Date:

The volcano Fagradalsfjall in Iceland has been active again since last Wednesday. Glowing rock flows from an approximately 300-meter-long gorge, providing a natural spectacle. Initially it was said that there was no greater danger to humans, but now poisonous gases released from the lava threaten a nearby village.

The Icelandic Weather Agency warned of dangerous gases in Vogar, a small village of about 1,000 people about three miles from the fissure from which lava flows continuously. The gases could even reach the capital Reykjavik, it is said.

There are warnings of air pollution from volcanic gases, as well as smoke from burning moss set ablaze by the glowing lava. Depending on the wind direction, the gas situation can change quickly.

Earthquake series announced eruption
A series of small earthquakes and underground magma movements had already heralded the eruption. Footage (see video above) shows glowing red lava gushing out of an elongated fissure. Sunday afternoon, another powerful earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale, which was also felt in the capital Reykjavik. That points to more magma movement underground, experts say.

It is not yet clear how long the outbreak will last. The eruption the previous year had caused lava fountains to skyrocket for nearly half a year. The natural spectacle had attracted many volcanologists, hikers and travelers. This time, too, many people moved to the area, which is just 30 kilometers southwest of Reykjavik.
