French President Emmanuel Macron is currently being branded a climate sinner by the opposition. The reason for the criticism is the holiday activities of the head of state – Macron was on holiday on a jet ski.
The president’s leisure activities confirm the “persistent impression” that Macron “does not understand global warming,” MP Sandrine Rousseau of the green party Europe Ecology-Les Verts (EELV) tweeted Tuesday. “And today it is criminal not to understand them.”
Explosive photos of summer residence
The tabloids had published photos of Macron showing him, as in 2020, on a jet ski and on a canoe trip near Fort de Brégançon. The fortress on the Mediterranean coast between Toulon and Saint-Tropez is the summer residence of the French president.
EELV chief Julien Bayou told AFP news agency Macron’s canoe trip was a “distraction” he used to make people forget his government’s “inaction” on climate change. It is too transparent to switch from jet skis to canoes and present it as an “attempt at austerity”.
Failing on climate policy?
“When are they performing?” asked Bayou. The climate council’s expert panel called for a departure, “and is he switching from jet skis to canoes?” added the Greens boss, looking at the head of state. At the request of the AFP news agency, the Elysée did not want to respond to the criticism.
