Not the Großglockner, but the imposing Dachstein massif is the most popular alpine photo motif in Austria on Instagram. On July 27, 2022, about 217,000 posts on the platform were dedicated to the 2,995-meter-long Dachstein. With 141,845 posts, the 3798 meter high Großglockner is only in third place, behind the Arlberg with 150,967 posts.
More than 2000 Austrian mountains and their hashtag presence on Instagram were evaluated for the APA-Comm statistics. The Dachstein, located between Hallstatt and Schladming, offers a unique view with an easy ascent with a gondola. In addition to photos of an ice cave, impressive mountain formations, lake landscapes and climbing and hiking impressions, especially images of the viewing platform “Sky Walk”, an attraction known as the “stairway to nothingness”, stand out on Instagram.
Behind the Großglockner, the Kitzsteinhorn (127,466 entries) ranks fourth in the top 10 mountains in Austria. The Großglockner is not only the highest mountain in the country, but also has Austria’s highest paved pass road with the Großglockner High Alpine Road, thus providing popular Instagram motifs, especially for motorized photographers.
The highest rises in the twenty most popular mountains in the ranking were recorded in the ridges around Vienna. Compared to 2019, the Schneeberg almost doubled its presence on Instagram to sixth place with a 99 percent increase. The same goes for the Hohe Wand (14th place).
