The construction of a two-part community center for around 47 million euros and three years of corona-limited tourism are the ingredients from which a rather bitter-tasting financial cocktail was brewed in Lech. The current municipal budget lacks twelve million euros.
Amazing things are happening in the tourist stronghold of Lech am Arlberg right now. The budget was approved Monday at the city council meeting. Not bad in itself, were it not for the “little thing” of twelve million euros. Twelve million euros that is missing. The municipal representatives of the ‘Ons Dorp’ list pull their hair out of these figures. The list’s finance officer, Thomas Eggler, finds clear words: “Lech’s financial situation is dramatic. Our community faces enormous financial challenges from the construction of the community center and the damage caused by corona in recent years.”
sell “family silver”.
Eggler and his list colleague Stefan Muxel now fear that the municipality will sell the “family silver”, or the land, to close the financial gaps. Another option is to take out more loans. The municipality has already built up a mountain of debt with the bank – not least for the construction of the large-scale community center project.
The great silence
Whatever variant Mayor Gerhard Lucian (List Lech) and the list “Together Uf Weg” decided – the public will not find out about it at first. Because no questions about this were answered in Monday’s meeting, nor did Lucian provide information over the phone.
Asked by “Krone” on Tuesday, he explained that he “doesn’t do politics about the media”. And that’s why he doesn’t want to say anything about the budget.
