Russia says it wants to facilitate a visit by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to the recently shelled Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine, which is occupied by its own troops. “For our part, we are ready to provide the maximum possible support to solve organizational problems,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.
At the same time, Moscow accused the United Nations of allegedly canceling an inspection trip to the nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine that was already planned, sparking another escalation.
The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in the city of Enerhodar was fired upon several times over the weekend and some were damaged. However, the vital infrastructure must remain intact.
Guterres demands access to terrain
Russia and Ukraine blame each other. The allegations have not yet been independently verified. UN Secretary-General António Guterres called the shelling of the power plant “suicidal” and called for international access to the site.
The Ministry of Climate Protection announced on Saturday that there is currently no danger for Austria. The radiation early warning systems in Ukraine and Austria would not show increased readings, it said.
