Paul and Marie: These were the top 2021 baby names in Austria. The name Marie managed to defend her place as number 1 in 2020, Paul is the most popular boy’s name for the first time since 2018. While more babies were named Valentina and Laura last year, Lea and David fell in the rankings. This data was used in Statistics Austria’s annual hit list of first names, which counts the baby’s first name in its original form without any special characters.

In 2021, 41,841 girls were born in Austria, of whom 1.9 percent – or 795 babies – were named Marie. Of the 44,237 born boys, 1.8 percent of the parents, so for 810 babies, chose the name Paul. Marie was already the girl’s name number 1 in 2020 and it was also popular in the years before. In 2009, Marie rose to number 9 in the list of the ten most common first names for girls and became increasingly popular, in 2016 and 2017 the name was on the podium with number 3. The name Paul, on the other hand, has been listed every year since 2012. in the list and was ranked number 9 10 in 2012, 2017 and 2019 in 2nd place and 2018 as a leader.

The top ten
