Highest share in 30 years: number of accidents caused by drink-driving has risen sharply.
In the warm months, alcohol consumption increases noticeably – with it the traditional number of accidents caused by drink-driving. About 2,300 alcohol-related accidents take place in Austria every year, with more than 2,900 injuries and 31 fatalities. “Summer is the peak season for alcohol-related accidents. However, a cheerful mood has lost nothing in road traffic. Even the smallest amount of alcohol impairs the ability to think and react”, warns Klaus Robatsch of the Dutch Road Safety Board (KFV).
Terrible accident record
But it is not only the accidents of the past summer months that have reached an above-average level. Statistics Austria’s accident record on Austrian roads shows that the highest percentage of accidents caused by drink-driving in the last 30 years occurred in the first quarter of 2022.
In 2021, a total of 212 alcohol-related accidents were counted in Vienna. Together with 2019, where there were the same number of alcohol-related accidents, this is the highest value in five years. Robatsch invokes his own responsibility: “For safety reasons, moving on the road by bicycle, scooter or car should not be an option if you are under the influence of alcohol!”
