Buses too heavy? – Lower Austria: residents afraid of bridge collapse

Date:

As a 19-ton bus is currently being diverted over a bridge in Wiener Neudorf in Lower Austria that is only designed for 16 tons, residents are concerned about the stability of the structure. Comparisons are even made with the Reichsbrücke in Vienna. However, the authority strongly dismisses the concerns.

“Have you learned nothing from the collapse of the Reichsbrücke?” A resident remembers the tragedy with a death in Vienna almost exactly 46 years ago. The man is convinced that a similar incident is currently imminent in Wiener Neudorf in the Mödling district. In concrete terms, this is a road bridge over the Mödlingbach with a maximum weight of 16 tons.

Reference to expert advice
And just like in 1976, today it’s all about an articulated bus. Because the 19-tonne vehicle regularly passes the approximately 70-year-old building on Laxenburger Strae as a track replacement service for the Badner Bahn. Smaller buses are not possible for capacity reasons, they say. But in the town hall and in the district administration, the security concerns are vehemently rejected. There is a static report and the restriction is only for one direction.

“There are some limitations”
“But there are a number of requirements that must be met,” explains District Governor Philipp Enzinger. There is a limit of 30 km/h for the buses, which are also allowed to cross the bridge alone and in the middle of the carriageway. “We’ll have that checked by the police,” Enzinger said. According to mayor Herbert Janschka, the tonnage limitation should primarily stop heavy traffic.
