An anesthetist from a fertility clinic in Lower Austria administered contaminated propofol to a 32-year-old patient. The woman died and two others required intensive care. On Thursday, the doctor was in the dock.
16 months, of which five for manslaughter – that is the verdict in the Causa fertility clinic in Baden. The 65-year-old anesthetist was convicted, who put the women into anesthetic sleep during the follicle puncture with propofol. A 32-year-old died and two other women had to go to intensive care.
Cold chain broken
According to the verdict, the doctor had made a devastating mistake: he had used the drug at another clinic the day before, but did not throw away the opened bottle, but took it home and kept it in the refrigerator. The broken cold chain created germs. The specialist took responsibility for not knowing that containers that had already been opened could no longer be used.
Attorney Michael Dohr immediately filed a full appeal – nullity, guilt and punishment. The verdict is therefore not final.
