A place to look through that harbors risks: Unsecured medium voltage pylons are dangerous to the endangered northern bald ibis.
With their black plumage and bald head, the great northern bald ibis draws attention wherever they appear. But the extraordinary birds are in constant danger: Unsecured medium voltage pylons are one of the most common causes of death for flying animals.
Especially in the warm months, the young birds like to use the posts as a resting place – five of them died in Salzburg and Carinthia. One carcass even caught fire and became a fire hazard. Species conservationists are therefore calling for these masts to be secured across the board: in this way the endangered large birds can be protected and the risk of fire is reduced.
