“Fires staged” – Kiev warns of a nuclear incident

Date:

The Kremlin itself staged the shelling of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, Ukrainian ambassador Serhiy Kyslytsia said. This has prevented a visit by experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) so far. At the same time, the ambassador warned of the possible consequences of a nuclear incident.

“None of us can stop the wind when this radioactivity spreads, but together we can stop the terrorist state (Russia),” Kyslyzia said Friday night. He called on Moscow to mine the nuclear facility and withdraw all military forces, weapons and technology from the site. As reported, the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) was repeatedly fired upon with missiles. Moscow and Kiev blame each other for the attacks.

The Russian side convened a Security Council meeting after the shelling. Earlier in May, Ukraine’s nuclear regulator had demanded the complete withdrawal of Russian troops to begin an IAEA mission to the power plant. Russian ambassador Wassily Nebensja subsequently confirmed that the nuclear power plant can still be visited this month. Kiev, however, would prevent such a mission, the Kremlin said.

In the meantime, a statement has been received from Ukraine that they are prepared to guarantee the safety of IAEA inspectors. Military experts are also needed for this. Since the beginning of March, Russian troops have occupied the nuclear power plant, which with six reactors and a net capacity of 5,700 megawatts is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Shortly before that, the war in Ukraine started.

Honey for soldiers in Ukraine
To boost the fighting spirit of the Ukrainian troops, ex-president (2005 to 2010) Viktor Yushchenko sent honey bars with nationalist logos to the front. An initial delivery includes 25,000 packs of portraits of national poet Taras Shevchenko and controversial Ukrainian nationalist and anti-Semite Stepan Bandera. “There is no common language with the Muscovites. And so with honey”, the packaging, which is decorated with Bandera, reads.

For the next series, the Ukrainians should propose variants, Yutschchenko said.
