Immigration police officers checked a truck driver from Romania in Vienna-Simmering on Friday morning. A total of eight men between the ages of 23 and 43 were found in the cargo hold of the vehicle. They indicated that they wanted to apply for asylum.
The 40-year-old driver has been arrested on suspicion of smuggling. A man in the hold was taken to a hospital in Vienna due to chest pain. A witness stated that he noticed before the check that another man had been in the driver’s cab of the truck and fled. His identity card was also secured during the check.
Observant witnesses informed the police
Apparently, a few hours after the check, he went back to the vehicle and tried to break it open, according to police. Attentive witnesses immediately alerted officials, so that the 28-year-old could be arrested and also arrested on suspicion of smuggling.
The investigation into the two men is still ongoing. Both suspects have been transferred to a detention center.
