“I wanted to kill someone” – a 35-year-old Croat, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, attacked a pensioner in a supermarket in Graz last fall with a broken beer bottle. The woman barely survived. Experts classify the man as very dangerous during the trial in Graz on Wednesday. Accordingly, the man is instructed. The jury hearing was record-breaking – it lasted just an hour and a half.
The incredible act that took place in November 2021 in a Spar supermarket on the Volksgartenstraße in Graz was captured on video: a woman is standing at the delicatessen counter. When out of nowhere a man comes running from behind, takes a broken beer bottle from his jacket pocket and stabs the woman in the neck and back of her head as if from his head.
Employees save the victim
Grocery store workers rush to help, tear the man from the woman and hold him until the police arrive. The retiree got off relatively lightly with cuts and bruises.
On Wednesday, the 35-year-old Croat had to answer to the court in Graz. The process was completed in record time. “The burden of proof is so clear that we rarely experience it,” said District Attorney Daniel Weinberger. “He wanted to kill a randomly chosen person, which he also told the police when they were being interrogated.”
“His head clicks and he wants to kill!”
Given the clear burden of proof, there is not much more to say for the 35-year-old. When asked by chairman Andreas Rom, who he remembers: “When I was in the Spar to buy something to eat, I heard voices, I had to stab the woman.” Psychiatric expert Manfred Walzl diagnosed paranoid schizophrenia. “His head clicks and he has the urge to kill. That feeling keeps coming back,” the expert points out about the danger.
Wanted for robbery
You would think that the man was already in an institution in Croatia a few years ago after attacking someone. But after a few days he was released. The 25-year-old also has a criminal record – due to a robbery in Croatia. He is currently wanted for a robbery on an international arrest warrant. The Croatian authorities will have to wait a little longer…
After barely an hour and a half, the jury reached a unanimous verdict: attempted murder and insanity. The Croat is committed to an institution for mentally abnormal lawbreakers. He accepted the decision.
