“Seeps away” useless – private households can save 40 percent water

Date:

Call to save energy! Because whole streams of water uselessly “seep” into the sewage system of Austrian households!

Exactly 3000 Austrians – a huge sample – were surveyed in detail for the water study of a Swedish furniture giant. The result of the IKEA eco-experts Florian Thalheimer and Uwe Blümel gives food for thought: almost three quarters (71.6 percent) do not even know how much precious water actually comes out of the pipes and ends up in the sewage system.

Another blind spot: a whopping 30.5 percent of those surveyed have no idea where their tap water comes from: a kind of ‘purple cow’ belief in everything that ripples, murmurs, dribbles and bubbles in your own four walls. One of the biggest water guzzlers is the toilet: 25 percent of the drinking water we use goes straight to the sewer.

With each flush, we use between 3 and 14 liters of water at the touch of a button (depending on the type and age of the cistern). To save our credit: When asked what is already being done in the household to save water, 77 percent say they fill their washing machines optimally, 75.9 percent avoid running taps and a third (33.5 percent) use rainwater to water their plants. But only a quarter (24.7 percent) use water-saving taps.

Total potential for saving the valuable droplets: 40 percent reduction!
