After the serious traffic accident on the A6 on Saturday at the Kittsee border crossing in northern Burgenland that left three people dead and 17 injured, four Syrians have now been released from hospital, police spokesman Helmut Marban said on Sunday.
Moments later, they applied for asylum. Due to the seriousness of the injuries and the fact that they were divided into different hospitals (four states), it has not yet been possible to definitively determine the identity of the other accident victims.
Russian driver arrested
The driver of the crashed van has since been taken to Eisenstadt prison. The Russian citizen was arrested after a short flight on foot near the accident site.
After an interrogation by a judge on Sunday morning, a decision will be made about the imposition of pre-trial detention, a spokesperson for the public prosecutor’s office said.
