An Afghan extended family in Völs near Innsbruck found themselves in a difficult situation on Sunday evening: after a barbecue, about ten people suddenly became trapped on an island in the Inn. Where the water was up to the ankles in the afternoon, the level rose to chest height within a few hours. Water rescue and fire brigade had to pull in with inflatable boats.
Shortly after 0:30 am, the water rescue service, the professional fire brigade of Innsbruck and the volunteer fire brigade of Wilten were alerted for the operation. “Since noon there was a family, there were about ten people, on the island. Apparently to barbecue and celebrate a bit,” Konrad Kirchebner of the water rescue service told the “Krone”.
Water only “ankle deep”
The adults and children had come to the island through a branch of the Inn. At that time, the water was only ankle deep. But that would change in the hours that followed: When the family was about to set up their tents and go home, the water level was suddenly much higher. “Chest high,” Kirchebner says.
emergency call made
The family was trapped and made an emergency call around 12:40 p.m. Water rescue and fire brigade then arrived with two inflatable boats and brought everyone back to safe shore.
“The operation itself was completed within a few minutes. Everything went well and everyone is unharmed,” Kirchebner said.
