A curfew for cats in Walldorf, Germany, came to an early end on Monday. It was intended to protect rare birds. The young animals are now so developed that there is no longer any risk for them, the agency justified the move.
Originally, the lockdown for cats should have lasted two weeks longer. From Monday they can go outside again, the district office of the Rhein-Neckar district announced.
Lockdown until 2025
At the same time, the authority made it clear that the original general decision was not revoked. “It will continue to apply until 2025 – in any case during the period from April 1 to August 31”. Some cat owners had already objected to the scheme. A caretaker has been fined €500 after his animal was spotted hunting near the birds’ breeding grounds south of the city.
There are only exceptions if the cats are kept on a short lead or are demonstrably not moving in areas where they could pose a threat to rare birds. The juveniles are Crested Larks, which are in danger of extinction. The move had caused a stir and criticism across Germany.
