Warehouse blown up – Six dead in heavy explosion in Armenia

The death toll has risen to six after the heavy explosion at a shopping center in Armenia. More than 20 people are being treated in hospitals, another 18 are still missing, the civil defense said Monday morning.

About 70 rescue workers are currently searching for them at the accident site. This is located just outside the center of the capital Yerevan. As reported, a gas pipeline exploded in a shopping center on Sunday afternoon (local time). According to the first information, a warehouse with fireworks exploded on the wholesale site. The fire was largely extinguished by Monday morning.

Meanwhile, huge clouds of smoke formed over the city and people ran away in panic. Several buildings collapsed or were damaged. Shortly after the blast, the Armenian Ministry of Health estimated that more than 60 people were injured, including a dozen children. More than 20 injured people are being treated in hospitals, according to the Armenian Civil Defense. All help came too late for at least six people. 18 people are still considered missing.

Armenia is one of the poorest countries in the region. Basic safety regulations are repeatedly not observed. The authorities assume that careless handling of fire was the cause of the explosion in this case.
