Spying for China? – AFD employee is expelled from the EU Parliament

Date:

In Dresden, police have now arrested an employee of the AfD’s top candidate for the European elections. He is said to have passed information from the European Parliament to China on several occasions in January 2024 and to have spied on the Chinese opposition movement. The EU Parliament has now suspended the man.

According to information from “Bild”, the alleged agent offered himself as an informant about ten years ago. However, German authorities at the time considered Jian G. unreliable and a possible double agent for China.

The suspect is now a close confidant of AfD top candidate Maximilian Krah. Since 2019 he has been an assistant with the Brussels team. A little later, the suspected spy is said to have accompanied the politician on his trip to China. He may have worked for the Chinese secret service since then.

Arrest at night
The arrest is said to have taken place on Tuesday evening. Krah also recently played a role in an affair surrounding a pro-Russian disinformation portal called ‘Voice of Europe’, which was shut down by the Czech government in March.

The employee will be brought before the investigating judge on Tuesday. A decision will then be made on an arrest warrant and pre-trial detention. The relevant information came from the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. The AfD described the case as “very disturbing.” The party would now have to wait for further investigation.

According to “Bild”, the man seemed to have no idea when he was arrested. “If it is confirmed that the European Parliament is spying for the Chinese intelligence services, it would be an attack from within on European democracy,” said German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser. All allies and backgrounds should be highlighted.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry rejected the accusations. “We hope that relevant personnel in Germany will give up their Cold War mentality and stop using the so-called espionage threat for political manipulation against China,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Tuesday.

The EU Parliament suspends AfD employees
Meanwhile, the EU Parliament responded to the espionage allegations. Krah’s employee was suspended on Tuesday.

Another case
On Monday, three Germans were arrested for possible espionage for China. The two men and a woman are said to have obtained information about military technology to pass on to Chinese intelligence.
