Three dead women in a horror accident in Schladming: the dreaded B320 in Ennstal is back in the picture. The dangerous road must be further defused by 2029. But not every planned project runs smoothly.
A violent accident of which there are (for the time being) no witnesses. Two completely destroyed vehicles. Three dead women. Monday morning’s horror crash on the Schladming ring road immediately sets the mental cinema in motion: the B320, the “death route” in the Ennstal. In the same area near the World Cup city, a head-on collision took place this year that cost a human life. A 65-year-old driver died in mid-April.
No street has been so hotly debated
Of course, the number of accidents is increasing all over Styria, which is worrying. 51 fatalities have already been reported. But no road is the debate as political and heated as the transit route through the Ennstal. This can be explained by history and the fact that expansion was prevented for decades.
It was only at the end of 2018, after a series of articles by the “Krone”, that Anton Lang, who is still responsible for the department as deputy governor, announced a package of measures. By 2029, 14 projects worth more than €50 million must be completed.
New Trautenfels junction has proven itself
The balance almost four years later: Two projects have been fully completed, the associated paths in Tipschern and the largest part, the conversion of the Trautenfels junction with an underpass and a roundabout. That has proven its worth, says mayor Roland Raninger of Stainach. “Especially in the summer there was often a delay on the east-west axis and coming from Aussee. This year, on the other hand, there are almost no waiting times.”
Leitspital gets its own connection
The dismantling of the B320 at the base station of the Hauser Kaibling (postponed by a year) is in progress: the road is being relocated, an accompanying path is being built. According to Lang’s office, six other projects are in the planning phase, including the fathomless connections in Wörschach-Ost, but also one project that was not on the agenda in 2018: a connection point for the Stainach hospital.
There are still many question marks about the Liezen ring road
What is striking: The country now only speaks of twelve instead of 14 projects. In two projects, negotiations on the plots have stalled, including the planned accompanying route in Lehen. Another gigantic project would be to bypass the district capital of Liezen. The government is currently investigating variants, including an extension of the existing route. time horizon? Totally unclear.
And the scene of the accident in Schladming? You should get a third number. But not until 2029.
