Are there any other victims? – Abuse at school: letter to 1000 families

Date:

A former sports teacher at a secondary school in Leopoldstadt is said to have sexually abused students for years undetected and hoarded child pornography material on his PC. After being caught, the educator committed suicide in 2019. But the shocking case is far from being completely solved, according to a letter from the Department of Education to students, former students and teachers.

About 1,000 families at a secondary school in Leopoldstadt now receive unpleasant mail from the education department. The explosive content of the letter to all parents and teachers whose children attended the affected school between 2004 and 2019 gets under your skin: a former sports teacher has been investigated for serious sexual abuse of minors.

It is now becoming increasingly clear that things also happened at the school location or in the context of his work. For example, he apparently made child pornographic material of school children aged eleven to fourteen for decades. The letter contains an offer for psychological help and is also a call to contact if you have been affected yourself.

Teacher committed suicide before questioning
About the background: The teacher committed suicide in 2019, after an anonymous report and a subsequent house search, prior to the interrogation. The criminal trial was halted, but not the shocking case in which dozens of victims fell.

Child pornography material hoarded on the PC
In 2020, the children’s and youth prosecutor’s office filed a report. The central question: how can an educator sexually abuse students on this scale and hoard child pornographic material on his PC for so long and unnoticed? In civil law proceedings, it was checked whether the principal and the school inspector had violated official duties: “Our aim is to draw conclusions about how such acts can be prevented in the future or at least stopped more quickly,” explains director of education Heinrich Himmer.

Report of the Commission of Inquiry in November
A specially appointed committee of inquiry will present its report in November. In addition, all schools must submit a prevention concept by December at the latest.
