The lab union “will not draw conventions which, at the end of their validity, do not guarantee that the purchasing power of the workers”, assured the deputy general coordinator of the factory, Igor Arroyo, this Wednesday in an interview in the Radio Euskadi program “Boulevard”. Arroyo, yes, has indicated that this guarantee, which is linked to a pay increase in line with the increase in the CPI, can be applied in different ways, depending on the size and circumstances of each company. In addition, it requires resources to ensure compliance with the Occupational Risk Prevention Act.
In this way, Arroyo recalled that since 2011, each male and female worker has lost an average of $6,000 in purchasing power: “We were told first that it was due to the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy; because of the pandemic; and finally that it is coming because of the war in Ukraine,” he noted, before complaining that government policies are moving toward further impoverishment of workers, rather than betting on dividing the wealth.
In this sense, LAB’s deputy general coordinator has placed in seven provincial agreements signed by the union in July and so far in August, and has indicated as a priority of the negotiations he is in “to increase the purchasing power of the workers” . The agreements in this context should be “reasonable, different in each company”, he stressed, pointing out that the situation of a large or multinational company is not the same as that of a smaller company: “Why are there in some large companies there are benefits and is there no pay increase in line with the CPI?” he denounced.
In order to guarantee this pay increase linked to the CPI, Arroyo explained that it is necessary to determine how it can be done in each case: “It can be from year to year, or in other ways,” he explained, and then to reiterate that LAB will not sign any agreements “that do not guarantee the purchasing power at the end of their term” of the templates they influence.
