Spain received a million fewer tourists in July than in 2019, but spent more

Date:

9.1 million foreigners visited Spain, twice as many as in 2021, and spent almost 12,000 million euros, the same as before the pandemic

Tourism continues to drive the Spanish economy. Data from the INE published Thursday shows that July was a very positive month for the sector after receiving 9.1 million international tourists, twice as many as in 2021 and only 800,000 people below the 2019 figures, before the pandemic.

In addition, despite the fact that the arrivals still do not exceed those of the pre-covid stage, the expenditure that these tourists made in our holiday destinations was the same as then. For example, the INE data shows that tourists spent 11,870 million euros in July, with an average daily spend of 170 euros, which is 17% more than in the same month last year and already 10 euros per day above the 2019 figures. when each visitor spent 160 euros a day.

This means that the number of international visitors in the first seven months of the year has quadrupled compared to the same period of the previous year. Until July, for example, the number of tourists visiting Spain increased by 299.9% to 39.3 million. With this new surge in July, both the arrival of international tourists and the spending they make in Spain have already seen 13 consecutive months of year-on-year increases after the coronavirus hiatus.

The United Kingdom was the main source country for visitors to Spain in July, with a total of 1.9 million tourists, which is 20.9% of the total and an increase of 241.6% compared to July 2021. France and Germany were the following countries that contributed visitors. France with 1.4 million (61% more year-on-year) and Germany almost 1.1 million (55% more).
