More than 300,000 unemployed – Unemployment up again in August

Date:

In August, 309,431 people were unemployed, of whom 60,412 were training from the Public Employment Service (AMS). Compared to July this means an increase of 12,784 job seekers. “The increase is higher than normal,” said Labor Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP). The difficult geopolitical situation is showing somewhat stronger effects for the first time. Despite this, unemployment was at its lowest level in nine years at the end of August.

At the end of the month, the unemployment rate was 5.9 percent. Compared to August last year, unemployment fell by 10.9 percent. The decrease was 12 percent for women and 9.9 percent for men. The number of employees increased by 1.6 percent.

Compared to the same month last year, however, this development is “gratifying,” said AMS board member Johannes Kopf on Twitter. But he points out that the economy and the decline in unemployment are weakening.

Biggest drop in Tyrol
Looking at the federal states, the largest decrease in the number of job seekers was in Tyrol (minus 16.8 percent), the lowest value was recorded in Carinthia (minus 8.7 percent). The difference between nationals and foreigners is significant: unemployment fell by 14.3 percent year-on-year in the first, and 4.5 percent in the second.

The decline was particularly strong among the long-term unemployed, with 46.1 percent fewer people registered as unemployed for more than a year compared to the previous year. But this is still 40,404 people.
