Spain pushes new system reforms to Brussels from its energy island

Pedro Sánchez assures that “in light of Putin’s blackmail, who has made it clear that energy is a weapon of war, unity”

The President of the government, Pedro Sánchez, this Saturday expressed his strong support for the G7 decision to put a limit on the price of oil bought from Russia, which has prompted Russian gas company Gazprom to to announce suspension of deliveries to Europe. “From the government of Spain, we support this measure, unity is fundamental, but we also ask the European Commission to implement once and for all the reforms we have been calling for for 12 months to help the working middle class and industry. defend that a lot of people,” said Sánchez. “Faced with Putin’s blackmail, who has made it clear that energy is a weapon of war, unity,” the president stressed during his meeting with socialist militants in Seville.

Spain has been proposing since last summer to adjust the current pricing system, in which gas determines the maximum daily costs. The Spanish position is far from the tension experienced by the community partners in terms of supply. The system has six regasification plants, the points of the ports where methane tankers from all over the world arrive with this raw material to be distributed across the peninsula. In fact, Spain accounts for a quarter of regasification plants across the EU, where they are now being hastily built so as not to be dependent on Russia.

Despite the problems with Algeria, where 40% of the gas comes from and whose current contribution is less than 25%, the Ministry of Ecological Transition rules out supply problems. The only gas connections with Europe are in the Basque Country and Navarra, but the export capacity via France is minimal. In fact, in recent days construction of the gas pipeline that would connect Catalonia to France (the MidCat) has been ramped up again, although France maintains its restraint.
