Spain and twelve other countries are putting pressure on Brussels to limit the price of gas imports

Date:

They will send a letter to the European Commission asking to limit the cost of this energy, not just the one from Russia

Three days before the Extraordinary Energy Council, Spain and 12 other countries are pressuring the European government to put a limit on the price of all the continent’s gas imports, not just that which comes from Russia. These member states are finalizing a letter to Brussels – which they could send this afternoon – demanding that it impose a limit on this energy, the price of which has skyrocketed since the start of the war in Ukraine.

The document, signed by Spain, Belgium, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Poland, Portugal and Romania, invites the European Commission to continue work in this area, with a view to making a proposal at a later date. legislation to be submitted in this area. The text insists that the gas limit “will not be limited to specific jurisdictions”, although the final initiative may differ over the course of the negotiations.

This instrument, these countries insist, should be designed to ensure “security of supply” for the continent. The Community Executive has so far been reluctant to adopt such a measure, as it would jeopardize the EU’s supplies. Just a few weeks ago, at the last Energy Council, Brussels refused to present a similar initiative, pointing out that “more work was needed” in this area.
