Refinery fully operational – Strategic oil reserve will be full again at the end of March

Date:

After repairs to the main distillation plant have been completed and the OMV refinery in Vienna-Schwechat is back in full operation, the state oil reserve is now gradually being replenished. By March 31, 2023, the reserve must be sufficient again for 90 days according to the law, the Ministry of Energy announced on Friday.

After the refinery accident in June, Austria, as well as Hungary and Slovakia, had repeatedly released state oil reserves to bridge the gap and ensure security of fuel supply.

After the last release, the Austrian oil reserve will last 65 days. From November 1, this reserve must contain 75 days of oil, by the end of the year 81 days. “By March 31, 2023, the full inventory obligation, the so-called emergency reserve (PNR), will be restored by 90 days,” the ministry said.

Schwechat refinery fully operational again
At the Schwechat refinery on June 3, 2022, during the legally required water pressure test as part of the latest work on the general overhaul of the refinery, the outer skin of the main column of the crude oil distillation plant was damaged.

In addition to OMV’s 800 employees at the Schwechat site, up to 320 people from various partner companies were engaged to carry out the repairs. At the end of September, the water pressure test was completed and production was gradually put into operation.
