The Flughafen Wien Group with airports in Vienna, Malta and Kosice can look back on a busy summer full of travel. In September, the number of passengers rose by more than 67 percent to 3.37 million travelers compared to the same month last year. At the Vienna site alone, 2.65 million passengers were handled (plus over 68 percent). This is nearly 90 percent of pre-pandemic levels.
In Vienna, the number of local passengers rose by 56.4 percent to 1.91 million and that of transfer passengers by 110 percent to 727,764 passengers.
Flight movements increased by a third to 19,495 take-offs and landings. Freight volume fell by 0.6 percent year-on-year to 21,306 tons.
The number of passengers at Vienna Airport to Western Europe increased by about 65 percent to 921,133 passengers in September, and by more than 61 percent to 218,123 passengers to Eastern Europe. The airport registered 48,825 passengers (up 120 percent) to North America and 19,586 (up 178 percent) to Africa. 67,692 passengers (an increase of 120 percent) traveled to the Near and Middle East and 19,557 passengers (an increase of more than 500 percent) to the Far East.
The Flughafen Wien holdings also had a strong occupancy: at Malta Airport the number of passengers rose by more than 57 percent in September to 658,569 travelers, reaching 86.4 percent of the pre-Corona level. At Kosice Airport, the number of passengers rose by almost 161 percent to 61,968 travelers, which is only 2.2 percent below the pre-crisis level.
