Strong plus – city tourism in Vienna almost at pre-Corona level

Date:

Vienna was almost as well booked in September as it was before the pandemic. The number of overnight stays increased by 50 percent year-on-year to about 1.29 million, reaching 85 percent of the pre-corona level of September 2019. The majority of bookings came from holidaymakers from Germany (268,000) and Austria (265,000). Compared to the same month last year, there were strong increases of 22 and 25 percent.

The Americans are back, too – their booking numbers were up 185 percent year over year to 92,000 overnight stays. They were followed by holidaymakers from Italy with 52,000 overnight stays (up 100 percent), Great Britain at 49,000 (up 189 percent), Spain at 39,000 (up 64 percent), Israel at 36,000 (up 4 percent), Poland by 31,000 (up 36 percent), France by 29,000 (plus 68 percent) and Ukraine by 22,000 (plus 116 percent).

Still room for improvement
Despite the noticeable upturn in demand, there is still room for improvement. But there are also significantly more hotels in Vienna than a year ago. In total, about 65,900 hotel beds were offered in September this year, about 6,300 more than the same month last year, according to the Vienna Tourist Board.

The hotel beds in the federal capital were occupied 54.7 percent in September (the same month last year (40.2 percent), the rooms about 71 percent (previous year: 52 percent). In the year so far – January to September – bed occupancy reached 43.5 percent (comparable period 2021: 22 percent) and room occupancy around 56 percent (same period last year: 29 percent).

Between January and September, Vienna registered nearly 9.13 million overnight stays – that was 185 percent more than in the same period of the previous year.

Revenues also recovered
In August, the overnight turnover of Viennese accommodation providers rose by 92 percent to around 84 million euros compared to the same month last year. Data for September are not yet available. In the period from January to August, the companies generated about 471.1 million euros, which is 263 percent more than in the same period of the previous year.
