Spain, Portugal and France agree to replace Midcat with gas pipeline connecting Barcelona and Marseille

Date:

The three countries will meet in December to discuss key aspects such as investment and cost sharing of the project

Spain, France and Portugal reached an agreement on Thursday on the interconnections of the Iberian Peninsula with the rest of Europe. The three countries have decided to replace the Midcat gas pipeline project with another “green energy corridor” that will connect Barcelona and Marseille. This was announced by the President of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, when entering the European Council summit in Brussels. “This project will accelerate the interconnection process, be consistent with the green transition and meet the demand for greater solidarity in the face of Putin’s blackmail,” he assured.

In recent months, Spain and Germany have created a common front to revive the Midcat project, which has clashed with French President Emmanuel Macron’s resounding ‘no’. For the French leader, this infrastructure is “unnecessary and would take too long to build.” On the contrary, he saw the need to improve electrical connections to the Iberian Peninsula and believed that this was “one of the EU’s energy priorities”.

The agreed solution pleases the three countries involved and the project will be further discussed in a tripartite meeting to be held on December 8-9. At that meeting, “fundamental aspects, such as investment deadlines, cost allocation and the volume of economic resources” needed to start up this gas pipeline, will be discussed, Sánchez describes.
