Chaotic conditions – train strike: orphaned points, standstill on A4

Date:

No easing of the traffic situation due to the railway strike on Monday: The increased traffic density was noticeable on the main arteries, especially in the federal capital, not only in the morning but also in the evening: In the afternoon there was temporarily nothing on the A4 towards Vienna .

Train traffic has been halted throughout Austria since midnight. After employee and employer representatives failed to reach agreement on a new collective labor agreement in a fifth round of negotiations on Sunday, the vida union put pressure on Monday with a one-day warning strike.

The consequences were already noticeable on the street in the morning. There were huge delays in road traffic, especially in the metropolitan areas of the provincial capitals and in Vienna. In the federal capital, the city entrances were mainly affected.

Orphaned switches
But the eastern entrance must also become a traffic jam hotspot in the afternoon hours. A ride from the airport to Vienna? Due to the strike, this day is not possible by train. In any case, there was no personal contact with customers at Vienna airport. The ÖBB ticket desk at the airport: empty, the shutters closed. The 24-hour strike was only mentioned on paper.

Standstill on the A4
There are not many alternatives to get from the airport to Vienna – so you had to use the car. And apparently many did, as the taxi companies say: on Monday, at least at Schwechat Airport, things went well. However, the increased crowds were soon felt on the streets. From Schwechat to the city, temporarily nothing on the A4 from the afternoon hours, there was a standstill on the entire highway towards Vienna. An accident does the rest. Soon the alternative routes became congested.

The next strike may also threaten in the coming days: as reported, retailers are also demanding higher salaries. If no agreement is reached, the commercial employees could also stop working next Friday and Saturday.
