70% of homes waste light: they have more power than they need

Date:

The recommended average power is between 4 and 4.5 kW, compared to more than 5 kW for a large proportion of homes that pay more for this type of contract.

More than 70% of households have contracted more electricity than necessary: 69.7% during peak hours (the most expensive of the day) and 74.6% during off-peak hours (the cheapest). This is evident from the second quarter of 2022, collected by the CNMC Household Panel.

This waste of energy, caused by the ignorance of households, is confirmed at a time of high electricity prices with revenues doubling over the past year.

The data from this Competitive Wave also point to an improvement in the knowledge that households have about the forms of energy supply. For electricity, the knowledge level of households about the differences between the free market and the regulated market (PVPC) has increased by more than 10 points in a year, from 30.5% in the second quarter of 2021 to 42.6% in the same period. period from 2022. For natural gas, the degree of knowledge between the liberalized market and the regulated market (TUR) has grown from 22.7% to 30%.

The problem is exacerbated by the fact that 40% of homes between four and six kilowatts have lost power, while a large proportion of these homes still have room for adjustment to reduce this. For example, if one of these points drops by 0.5 kilowatts (Kw) -from 4.6 to 4.1-, your bill could drop by about $26 a year (just over $2 a month). In this group, there would be 4.5 of the 11.2 million currently receiving the PVPC. The savings would amount to 117 million euros. Below 4 Kw, a power adjustment is difficult for a home with several electrical appliances; and especially those who have suffered it is because they really need it because of the intensive light consumption they make.

Faced with this reality, there is a possibility that private electricity contract holders will be able to reduce the contracted power in increments of 0.1 Kw, compared to the 1.1 Kw required to change the voltage in a home until 2018, which makes the application of it by being forced to drastically reduce power.
