Up to 25 cents too much – refueling at Easter is way too expensive this year!

Date:

In the past, prices for petrol and diesel at home pumps rose for long weekends or holidays. This phenomenon is less noticeable at the moment, but fuel prices are generally ten cents (super) to 25 cents too high for diesel, the Momentum Institute has calculated.

Because although the price of crude oil is approaching pre-crisis levels, the difference between the oil price and the net selling price, ie the range, eg Diesel is almost twice as high as the five-year average. “In the slipstream of war, some companies make quite a bit of money,” said Momentum expert Oliver Picek.

Price cap on requested profit margin
He therefore recommends a price cap on the profit margin of the mineral oil companies, such as the long-term average of 20 cents (Super) and 25 cents for diesel. However, Treasury Secretary Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) rejected a general cap on fuel prices.

ÖAMTC expert Martin Grasslober also criticizes the high costs and welcomes the investigation initiated by the competition authorities. In general, he recommends checking the cheapest gas stations (see image above) before going on your Easter vacation.

Zadic appoints federal prosecutor for cartels
“We are now going to look very closely at whether there have been illegal price fixing or cartel formations,” emphasized Justice Minister Alma Zadic (Greens) in mid-March, who launched an investigation by the federal cartel prosecutor into the “literally sky-high” fuel prices in Austria.

ÖVP club president August Wöginger supports their approach. “We have to do everything we can to support people who need the car. No one should take unfair advantage of the crisis. That must be guaranteed. Falling crude oil prices should show up at the pumps soon,” he explained.
