The Secretary General of the organization, Mathias Cormann, who meets in Gran Canaria, assures that it is necessary to put human rights at the center of digital transformation
Digitization is increasingly driving the global economy, permeating all sectors and impacting all aspects of life, bringing new economic opportunities to the private sector and to the advancement of society as a whole. But while the benefits of digital transformation must be harnessed by providing great potential for innovation, well-being and prosperity, as well as data access, it cannot be ignored that all these advancements must respect individuals and human rights in order to benefit from ” all the opportunities” presented by technologies that, according to OECD Secretary General Mathias Cormann, were “vital during the pandemic”.
That is why the aim of the IVth Ministerial Conference of the OECD on the Digital Economy, being held in Europe for the first time, is to analyze action strategies and key points to achieve a “trustworthy, sustainable and inclusive” digital future that will of the digital economy and are “much safer”.
During his welcome speech, Cormann assured that at the meeting, which will last until Thursday, the aim is to reach a consensus to achieve a “safe” digital transformation and to always put human rights at the center of digital transformation. For this reason, in his opinion, in today’s society it is necessary to create “safe technological environments” in order to achieve a suitable future.
And it is that according to the first vice-president of the government, Nadia Calviño, “digitalization is and must be compatible with the protection of democratic values and human rights”, so respecting digital rights “is a priority element” in a transformation that “it’s not tomorrow” but “it’s here and now”.
For this, the ministerial meetings held until next Thursday in the Expomeloneras space on the island of Gran Canaria, in addition to building better societies and prioritizing people in digital transformation, also aim to harness the power of intelligence Artificial and emerging technologies.
