Half of the power that the green company has worldwide is in Spain
Iberdrola’s installed capacity of 40,000 MW of renewable energy in all countries where it operates, after absorbing almost 2,000 MW more in 2022, representing an increase of more than 5% compared to the previous year.
This was reported to the CNMV by the group led by Ignacio Galán at a relevant event describing that it has reached 39,963 green MW, consolidating itself as one of the electricity companies with the cleanest installed capacity in the world, with 80% free of emissions.
In terms of technology, the first energy is onshore wind, which exceeds 20,000 MW for the first time in its history after installing 750 MW in 2022. Among last year’s projects, the Oitis onshore wind farm in Brazil stands out. Consisting of 12 wind farms, this facility will have a total installed capacity of 566.5 MW, making it the company’s largest onshore wind project in Latin America and second in the world. In addition, it has started commercial operation of its first solar park complex in Brazil, Luzia, with a capacity of 149 megawatts.
It is also worth mentioning the development of photovoltaic solar energy, which already reaches 4,264 MW, after the installation of 1,204 MW in 2022. This strong impulse is mainly due to the incorporation of the Francisco Pizarro photovoltaic installation with 553 MW -in Cáceres (Extremadura )-, which annually supplies clean energy to 334,400 households. On an international scale, the development of the 193 MW Lund Hill Photovoltaic Plant, the largest solar project in Washington State, and the 200 megawatt (MW) Golden Hills Wind Farm in Sherman County, Oregon (USA) are noteworthy. .
Of the company’s entire sustainable portfolio, Spain represents almost 50%, as the country has installed nearly 19,800 ‘green’ MW, positioning the country as one of the major powers in Europe. For its part, the United States has 8,702 green MW, mainly wind, Brazil reaches 4,568 MW and the United Kingdom more than 3,000 MW. The rest of the country group 3,890 green MW.
Renewable energy production reached 74,525 GWh in 2022, thanks to the new installed capacity and the positive behavior of onshore wind energy, which compensated for the lack of rain. The production of onshore wind energy even increased by 9.3% to 45,195 GWh. The photovoltaic contribution is also striking, which will amount to almost 4,000 GWh in 2022, thanks to the commissioning of new power stations.
The company assured on its Capital Markets Day that it will reach 52,000 renewable MW by 2025. To do this, it will install 12,100 new green MW -3,100 MW onshore wind, 6,300 MW photovoltaics, 1,800 MW offshore, 700 MW batteries and 200 MW hydropower – by 2025. The group has already secured 50% of the new capacity and by 2025 about 95% of the production will be contracted. For 2030, the outlook presented on Capital Markets Day foresees a ‘green’ generation capacity of 80,000 MW, with a total portfolio of 100,000 megawatts.
To achieve the above figures, the energy company has committed to invest 17,000 million euros between 2023-2025, in high-quality projects and with the best risk/return ratio. Of this, 46% will focus on offshore wind energy in France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. For the other technologies, onshore wind will account for 25% of the investment, photovoltaic energy 24%, hydraulics 2% and batteries 3%.
