Puertollano will have Spain’s first green steel plant

Date:

The company, “Hydnum Steel”, in partnership with “Siemens”, will create 400 jobs and produce 600,000 tons of steel per year without using fossil energy

Puertollano (Ciudad Real) will house one of the first factories in Europe and the first in Spain designed to produce “green steel”. The project, which the company “Hydnum Steel” presented on Tuesday, is that of a new generation steel mill technologically prepared to use non-fossil energy in the production process.

The factory will occupy an area of 1.3 million square meters in the industrial area “La Nava” in this city of 50,000 inhabitants and will have an investment of one billion euros. The project creates 400 jobs, produces 600,000 tons of steel per year and has Siemens as a technology partner.

This new company will gradually integrate green hydrogen into the production process with the aim of substantially reducing CO2 emissions. As explained by the CEO of the Helvella investment company, Eva Maneiro, “the strategic location of Puertollano has been taken into account, close to the logistics hubs of central, southern and eastern Spain, as well as Portugal; the development of hydrogen production projects already active in the area, the availability of land and the presence of the National Hydrogen Centre, which opens the possibility of creating alliances with this research pool”.

The steel industry is currently responsible for 9% of carbon dioxide emissions in the world and 7% in the European Union. The future plant in Puertollano will replace fossil fuels with green hydrogen, contributing to decarbonising the sector and minimizing water consumption.

According to Siemens Spain President and CEO Agustín Escobar, “This project will not only have a positive impact on its own facilities in terms of reducing the

carbon footprint, but will also impact industries such as automotive and shipbuilding, where using greener steel will help them meet their decarbonisation targets.”
