Minister of Labor Martin Kocher (ÖVP) opened a debate on part-time work as a problem for the labor market. The union still wants to talk about short-time work with equal pay.
While the government wonders how to keep people working longer and reduce part-time work, the union is demanding a reduction in working hours to 36 hours a week with full pay. The employers’ side and ÖVP minister Martin Kocher think little of it. “A general reduction in working hours would further exacerbate the shortage of labor and skilled workers.” Short-time work can only exist on a sector-specific basis, and that is a matter of collective bargaining or individual agreements.
